Virtual Donations Allow More to Fight Against Breast Cancer

Virtual Professionals Back Co-Worker as She Walks to End Breast Cancer in the 3-Day Walk

Lodi, WI (10/19/06) - When Ruthie Palmatier celebrated her grandmother’s birthday this year, she was the one receiving the gift. Breast cancer struck her family’s rock fourteen years ago. Palmatier was devastated as she watched her grandmother undergo a radical mastectomy and grueling treatments, but she is alive to blow out the candles on her ninetieth birthday cake. Ruthie hopes walking in the Breast Cancer 3-Day in San Diego will allow more women to blow out the candles on own their birthday cakes.

“I am walking because I cannot walk away. I want to do something bold to help fight the disease, and what better way is there than the 3-day?” asks Palmatier. More than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year and more than 40,000 American women and men will lose their lives to the disease.

To participate, each walker must train and must commit to raising a minimum of $2,200. They will be supported by hundreds of volunteer crew members who will provide meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and comprehensive medical services.

As Palmatier walks to honor her family’s battle with breast cancer, she remembers women affected early in life. An eighteen-year-old friend of her daughter recently learned that she had the disease. Palmatier says, “Seeing this disease touch someone so young made it quite clear to me that there was no way I could just sit back and do nothing.”
